RED CARPET 5 | 2011

C PRINT + DIASEC | 436.8 X 294 CM

In its construction and imagery, this  work contradicts Western perceptions of Eastern art being handmade, since it is digitally-generated, yet it plays upon these expectations by employing the imagery of an intricately crafted Persian carpet. At the same instance, it re-appropriates traditional Eastern aesthetic principles by picturing time-based subject matter, photographs of a slaughterhouse in Lahore, on a flat surface. These formal aspects merge with the poignant subject matter, to comment on violence, death, destruction and existence.
