LANGUAGE III | 2010-2011

C PRINT + DIASEC | 360 X 270 CM

An abstract imagery breaks up into thousands of photographic images of text as part of all kind of signboards in Lahore, many of which are written in Urdu. These signs are often transliterations from English (a legacy of colonialism) and bring together in the language the competing claims of varying cultural reference points on the popular imagination. The work, as a whole, takes on the aspect of looking like a truncated and pixilated image from a computer. There is something very mechanical about the deliberate patterns that exist in the work and there are implicit allusions to geometric abstraction.
