ART HISTORY LESSONS | 2000

OIL, ACRYLIC AND GRAPHITE ON CANVAS | 41.5 X 65 INCHES

Art history has played a pivotal role in formulating ideas and practices, not only of art, but about life as well. It serves as a vehicle for colonial concepts of supremacy of certain cultures and civilizations in comparison to other societies. Hence the work drawing its main motif from a painting by Gustave Courbet, the French artist, addresses these notions, and also questions how art education leads to formulated and fixed ideas about other spheres in social, political and historical contexts.
